The MiuraClosely based on the now legendary ‘Solid-Guitar’ Junior, the Guyton Miura is a re-think of this legendary guitar.
The SGJ (LP) was introduced in 1961 as a less expensive, entry level guitar. But over the next 60 years or so, it grew to legendary status due to its simple construction and gutsy sound. However, a few niggles surfaced. The balance was never great with ‘neck dive’ being a problem. The headstock could prove to be a little on the fragile side, and to some, the control layout could be a little awkward…particularly when a straight jack plug was used, also, the intonation could be a little out due to the angled stop bar tailpiece. The balance issue was greatly improved with moving the strap button to the point of the upper horn with a reinforced mount and with using lightweight open-geared Waverley machine heads. The volume control is mounted to the tortoiseshell pick-guard just under the bridge, and the jack socket is mounted on the edge of the body. The potentially fragile headstock has been addressed with a slightly shallower angle together with reinforcement from tapered quarter-sawn headstock ‘ears’. The use of the ABM Modern tailpiece enables straight mounting with accurate preset intonation. As well as the practical issues, I’ve long thought that the original guitar deserved a more upmarket feel and construction. The Miura features a Rosewood or ebony fingerboard and ebony headstock veneer bound with tortoiseshell and inlayed with Mother-of-pearl dot markers and Guyton logo. With the Guyton Miura, I have tried to create the ultimate version of what has become mine, and many other’s favourite electric guitar. |
